I’m sorry to anyone who thought I was going to Gumby’s as intermittently advertised. I went to Bobby T’s due to Jed’s and Chrisi’s insistence. I almost miss the days that I was assigned five songs and could only perform those and was forced to get off stage. Tonight I played 17 songs. Half of the alcohol I consumed was paid for by other people. That’s nice, but I wish I could be forewarned when I have to finish the night…with over an hour of time to go. Maybe it’s just that facet of me that has to look pessimistically on a good thing. Anyway, I think this is the last time that I set a goal for myself that I will play all four open mic nights in Manhattan. It was a good experience, but I think I will limit myself to two nights a week.
5 February 2003 Show – O'Malley's Open Mic
I guess, ironically, that the biggest compliment you can get when you get through playing an open mic is when the guy running the open mic says, “Let’s give a big, heart felt f**k you to Aaron!” The next thing that happened is that an off-duty waitress bought me a beer. My life is full of mixed signals.
Hastings Geek Rock Showdown…
Arturo Got The Shaft is squaring off against Allen Masterton in a Geek Rock duel to the death. Two geeks going in… only one is making it out alive Friday night at the Blue Moon Cafe in Hastings. Preliminary peace talks have failed and the embassies close at 8pm, signaling the beginning of this musical peacekeeping conflict. Justification? Weak. Evidence? Speculatory. But, sometimes, there is just no stopping some people.
8pm.
Friday.
Blue Moon, Hastings.
